Steps to becoming a sergeant or inspector

The NPPF is a four-step promotion process for police officers seeking promotion to the rank of sergeant or inspector.

  • Step 1 – achiveing a state of good conduct and experiance within your current rule
  • Step 2 – Passing the NPSE or NPIE Exam
  • Step 3 – Being Selected out of a Pool of Sargents and Inspectors
  • Step 4 – temporary promotion (4 weeks) and a work based assessment leading to a permenet apointment, a return to the pool or removal from the Promotion Prosse going back to Step 1

Once all steps are done the promotion is offical.

Steps 1,Step 2,Step 3 (Pool Placement Only),Step 4 (Partial) are managed by the Collage of Policing

Step 3 (Selection), Step 4 ( Work Based Assesment Part 2A) are managed by the force

Compatancy Requirements Per Rank

This section outlines the Step 1 Requirements for Each rank

The criteria must be kept through the entire NPPF Process

PC->PS

  • Completed their probationary period and been at least 2 weeks since end of probation.
  • Demonstrated competence in there current rank
  • No live written improvement notices issued under the Police (Performance) Regulations 2020 or reduction in rank under those procedures in the previous 12 months, beginning with the date of the notice.
  • No live written warning, final written warning or extended final written warning issued
  • Adhered to the attendance management policy

PS->PI

  • Completed their probationary period and been at least 2 weeks since end of probation.
  • Compleated NPPF Step 4 and haed a signed off work based assesment
  • Demonstrated competence in there current rank
  • No live written improvement notices issued under the Police Performance Regulations 2020 or reduction in rank under those procedures in the previous 12 months, beginning with the date of the notice.
  • No live written warning, final written warning or extended final written warning issued
  • Adhered to the attendance management policy
